What is military hospital admin like? Is it similar to what you would do at a civilian hospital?
What are the leadership opportunities like on a day to day basis?
Military healthcare administration is very similar to what you see in the private sector. In fact, there are many cases where the Military Health Service and Veterans Administration are leading the way in medicine improvements (i.e. electronic medical records). We are a support element to the daily responsibilities of our direct care medical staff. Whether working with budget constraints, manpower issues, or procurement of items, we are a vital element of quality healthcare provision.
From the start, as a Medical Service Corps Officer, you are able to apply many of the leadership principles you learned from 4 years at the Academy. In under a year, I was a deputy flight commander, supervising approx. 25 staff, ranging from enlisted members, Government Service Civilians, to Contractor staff. This leadership involves development of communication skills through delegation, providing performance feedback, planning flight/element activities, etc. You also learn the importance of being flexible in the work environment.
